Glossary Term: Statute “Political Prisoner”

The statute passed in Belgium in February 1947 considered people of Belgian nationality who had been imprisoned for more than 30 days for political reasons, suffered mistreatment, or had been executed. It distinguished between “beneficiaries” and persons awarded a title for “patriotic or selfless reasons,” which excluded many Jewish victims. Relatives could also apply on behalf of deceased persons.
