What is Projekt EZu?
Project EZu focuses on people who were unjustly imprisoned during the period of National Socialism (1933–1945).
These people were treated badly even though they had done nothing wrong.
The project asks:
Did these people later receive money from the state because an injustice had been done to them?
This kind of payment is called compensation.
That means: money as redress for the suffering they experienced.
“EZu” is an abbreviation for:
Compensation for people who were imprisoned or held in penal institutions.
What was the Nazi era?
In Germany, the Nazi era lasted from 1933 to 1945.
A political group, the National Socialists,
persecuted people and imprisoned many of them.
Many were even killed.
Later, some of these people were able to receive money
because they had suffered injustice.
Project EZu works on researching this.
What is the project about?
Project EZu wants to find out:
- Who was imprisoned at that time?
- How did they experience their lives afterward?
- Did they receive compensation or not?
The project staff:
- study archival documents
- conduct interviews with contemporary witnesses
- write reports and articles
- publish a blog reporting on their work
Who is involved?
The project is part of the Wolfenbüttel Memorial.
This is a place dedicated to remembering injustice committed during the Nazi era.
Experts and researchers work there.
They collaborate closely with other memorial sites,
universities, and the foundation team.
What does the project include?
- Archival research – reading historical documents
- Interviews – speaking with affected individuals or their families
- Blog – publishing texts about the project’s work
- Research – writing about the findings
Why is this important?
Many victims of the Nazi era were not properly compensated.
Their suffering was often forgotten.
Project EZu seeks to ensure they are recognized.
This helps make society more just.
